Hardware has become more powerful, cheaper and smaller (due to competition, mass production and optimisation e.g. ARM micro-processors in millions of; netbooks, tablet PC's and every mobile phone; which are actually very powerful computers).

Now there is a trend of putting more technology in all devices, even printers - or rather making better use of the components that have always been in printers. For example, printers have always needed; a micro-processor, memory and interfaces - but these were previously made for a very narrow and specific task (to cut cost at the expense of features and flexibility).

Effectively this new printer is a powerful host computer; which can even have printers of its own attached to it or other devices like; keyboards, scales, cameras, etc. In fact, it is a server computer, because it is running a web server (like the computer that runs your website). It even runs the same operating system as every good website in the world - Linux. It even runs the software most websites are build on - PHP and has an SQL database. This all makes this printer more like a website that happens to have a printer attached, than a mere printer on a network (which it also is if required).

In fact, this printer is as powerful as some EPOS systems, and in fact that is likely the idea - hide the EPOS till coputer inside the printer. Maybe they could hide the receipt printer inside the cash drawer and use the space saved on top of the cash drawer for a tablet display.

The Epson TM-T88V-i provides an elegant printing solution without drivers - just a LAN or WLAN connection - ideal for tablets / mobile phones.

Software developers and even website developers can send data to the printer and the printer can be made as clever as required; using simple tools that even web developers can use.

Now simple to maintain applications can print from any device running an HTML 5 web browsers. TM-T88V-i is able to receive XML commands from web applications and communicating directly with browsers supporting HTML 5 like; Firefox, Opera, Safari, Chrome, Internet Explorer and standard Android browsers.

Also control cash drawers, as well as additional printers with a wired or wireless UIB interface, such as order-driving kitchen printers.

In addition, the TMT88V-i has greyscale printing for the addition of logos and images to receipts. Supports ESC/POS printer commands.

Fast thermal line printing 300 mm/sec on thermal receipt paper width 80 mm (56 or 42 columns of text). Resolution 180 dpi.
